Kolkata, June 15: Abhishek Banerjee, the national general secretary of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Lok Sabha MP, claimed on Monday that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is making concerted efforts to create an opposition-free political environment in West Bengal.
He was summoned for over 11 hours of questioning at the Enforcement Directorate (ED) office located in the northern outskirts of Kolkata, Salt Lake. After exiting the ED office around 10 PM, Banerjee spoke to the media, indirectly suggesting that the actions taken against him by state and central investigative agencies are part of the BJP’s vendetta politics aimed at eliminating opposition in West Bengal.
He stated, “The less said about the BJP, the better. On one hand, they are trying to infiltrate opposition parties. For the past month, there has been an effort to suppress, intimidate, and eliminate those opposition forces that continue to fight without yielding. This entire campaign is aimed at establishing an opposition-free political system in West Bengal.”
Banerjee also accused the BJP of manipulating the voter list through Special Intensive Review (SIR) and rigging the counting process to win elections. He asserted that the BJP now does not want to grant the opposition its democratic rights.
He added, “They have attempted to break our party’s elected MLAs and MPs, but I want to say that all these efforts will ultimately yield no results. Even if our throats are cut, we will not surrender.”
Abhishek Banerjee is scheduled to appear for questioning again on Tuesday, June 16, at the Crime Investigation Department (CID) headquarters in South Kolkata, regarding an FIR filed against him. The FIR alleges that he threatened Union Home Minister Amit Shah and incited violence ahead of the recently concluded assembly elections.
CID officials had issued a notice to him in this regard on the evening of June 12.
