
Bengaluru, March 14: The first day of the 5th Indian Open Jumps Championship witnessed an intense competition in the men’s triple jump event. Abdullah Abubakar triumphed over Praveen Chitrawel to secure the gold medal.
Held at the Anju Bobby George Foundation campus in Bengaluru, Abubakar, representing the Air Force, began with a jump of 16.05 meters. He improved significantly in his second attempt, reaching 16.57 meters. In his third jump, he found his rhythm and soared to 16.83 meters, clinching the gold medal. Notably, he did not attempt his last three jumps.
In this season’s inaugural competition, Praveen Chitrawel settled for the silver medal with a jump of 16.78 meters.
Shifting focus from the triple jump, Army international jumper Sarvesh Anil Kushare emerged victorious in the men’s high jump. He cleared a height of 2.16 meters on his third attempt to win gold, although he failed to surpass 2.19 meters.
The men’s pole vault also delivered thrilling action. Training partners Dev Meena and Kuldeep Kumar aimed to break the national record of 5.40 meters, set by Dev Meena last year. However, both fell short, managing to clear only 5.25 meters. Dev Meena was the first to achieve this height, earning him the day’s honor.

Men’s High Jump Under 18: Devak Bhushan (Kerala) 2.03 meters, Jubin Gohen (JSW) 1.95 meters, Virendra Ranavare (Maharashtra) 1.85 meters.
Men’s Triple Jump: Abdullah Abubakar (Air Force) 16.83 meters, Praveen Chitrawel (Tamil Nadu) 16.78 meters, Geli Venistar (Tamil Nadu) 16.48 meters.
