2,731 Drunk Driving Cases Recorded in Greater Hyderabad During New Year

Hyderabad, 1 January: During the New Year celebrations, a total of 2,731 cases of drunk driving were registered across the Greater Hyderabad area. The action was carried out under a special police campaign conducted overnight between 31 December and 1 January across the three police commissionerates of Hyderabad, Cyberabad, and Rachakonda.

Within the Hyderabad commissionerate limits, 1,198 cases were recorded, while Cyberabad reported 928 cases and Rachakonda registered 605 drunk driving incidents.

The Hyderabad Traffic Police launched a special enforcement drive from 7 PM to 3 AM to ensure road safety and prevent accidents. The main goal of this campaign was to safely escort commuters to their destinations, curb drunk driving, and reduce the risk of fatal and non-fatal road accidents during the New Year festivities.

Joint Police Commissioner (Traffic) R. Venkateswarlu stated that the Traffic Police aimed to welcome the New Year without any accidents, encouraging citizens to celebrate responsibly and safely.

Out of the total 1,198 cases in Hyderabad, action was taken against 1,042 two-wheeler riders, 51 three-wheelers, and 105 four-wheelers and other vehicle drivers.

The police classified offenders based on Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) levels. There were 175 cases with BAC levels between 35 to 50 mg/100 ml, 468 cases between 51 to 100 mg/100 ml, 293 cases from 101 to 150 mg/100 ml, and 163 cases between 151 to 200 mg/100 ml.

Additionally, 51 cases were recorded with BAC levels from 201 to 250 mg/100 ml, 31 cases between 251 to 300 mg/100 ml, and 17 cases exceeded 300 mg/100 ml.

The Joint Commissioner emphasized that a ‘zero tolerance’ policy will be maintained against drunk driving and that these special campaigns will continue. He appealed to citizens to cooperate with the Hyderabad Traffic Police.

Meanwhile, Hyderabad Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar expressed gratitude to the public for celebrating the New Year without any major incidents. He posted on ‘X’ that strict enforcement, effective awareness, and public cooperation ensured no untoward events during the anti-drunk driving drives.

He added, “This did not happen by chance. Awareness worked, responsibility won, and your cooperation made a difference. Let us continue working together to make Hyderabad safer and truly a global city.”

The Police Commissioner also congratulated all officers for the successful arrangements on New Year’s Eve and strict enforcement of drunk driving laws.
