New Delhi, August 30: Amid ongoing statements and protests regarding reservation in India, Dr. Sanghpriya Rahul, the head of the Indian Buddhist Union, asserted that the reservation based on Dr. Ambedkar’s Poona Pact will never be abolished. He emphasized that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, it has only strengthened. Dr. Rahul accused the Congress, Samajwadi Party, and Aam Aadmi Party of spreading confusion about the potential end of reservation.
Dr. Rahul stated, “Currently, there are various statements and protests at Jantar Mantar regarding reservation, and many people believe it should be abolished. The Poona Pact established by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar was our agreement. It is based on this agreement that we received reservation, which has only been reinforced since Prime Minister Modi took office. Reservation will never end.”
He further commented on the misinformation being circulated, particularly by the Congress, Samajwadi Party, and Aam Aadmi Party, claiming they are misleading the public into believing that reservation will be abolished. “I assert firmly that as long as Prime Minister Narendra Modi is in power, no one will be able to abolish reservation,” he added.
Dr. Rahul stressed the need for dialogue with India’s intellectuals and the Dalit community to reach a consensus. He urged people to recognize that the misinformation being spread is unfounded and that reservation will not only continue but will become stronger. “Those who wish to end reservation are not true Indians; they do not have the country’s best interests at heart,” he stated.
Regarding reservation reforms, Dr. Rahul mentioned that while the government can decide on reforms, the existing reservation for Dalits must remain intact. He highlighted that many Dalits in rural areas are still not receiving their rightful reservations. He expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister and the Chief Justice for introducing significant legislation that addresses the reservations for Dalits converting to Christianity or Islam, calling it a commendable plan.
He concluded by urging the government to create plans and make decisions. “The reservation for Dalits in India will not only remain but will be further strengthened. Dr. Ambedkar also suggested that India’s currency should change every ten years and that political reservations should be reconsidered. However, the fundamental reservation that provides dignity and self-respect to Dalits should not be abolished until equality is achieved in the country.”
