New Delhi, February 24: Delhi police have arrested Uday Bhanu Chib, the National President of the Indian Youth Congress, in connection with the “shirtless protest” that occurred during the India AI Impact Summit held at Bharat Mandapam last week.
According to sources, Chib was taken into custody on Tuesday morning and formally arrested after questioning. He was subsequently presented in court.
The Delhi police stated that individuals from various parts of the country are involved, necessitating a seven-day custody for further investigation.
Authorities are trying to determine whether there was an organized plan behind the protest. The investigation is ongoing.
Earlier, on Monday, several individuals, including Jitendra Yadav, Raja Gurjar, and Ajay Kumar, were arrested along with others from Gwalior. A case has been registered against them at the Tilak Marg police station. Police reported that the protesters had registered online to obtain QR codes for entry into the venue. Initially, they planned to sneak black umbrellas into Bharat Mandapam by attaching stickers to them, believing these would attract the attention of security personnel at the entrance. However, they altered their strategy and opted to wear T-shirts with the stickers underneath their shirts.
This incident gained attention when Youth Congress activists staged a protest without shirts during the AI Summit, chanting slogans against the central government’s policies, rising unemployment, and issues related to AI. Following the disruption at the venue, police registered a case for public disorder, resulting in a total of eight arrests, including Uday Bhanu Chib.
According to police, Youth Congress members entered the lobby area of Hall Number 5 on Friday, removing their shirts or holding them up while chanting slogans.
