Young Woman Found Dead in Lucknow, Family Alleges Planned Murder After Six Months of Marriage

Lucknow, May 27: A tragic incident has emerged from Lucknow, where 26-year-old Shweta Singh was found hanging in her in-laws’ home on May 25, just six months after her marriage.

Shweta’s family has accused her husband and in-laws of dowry harassment, claiming her death was not a suicide but rather a planned murder.

Her father, Umesh Kumar Singh, stated that he spent beyond his means for Shweta’s wedding to Bhupendra Singh on November 22, 2025. Despite this, he alleges that the groom’s family continued to pressure him for additional dowry, including a Scorpio SUV and 1 million rupees in cash.

According to NDTV, Shweta’s sisters, Komal and Jyoti, claimed that these demands were openly made during the farewell ceremony. They alleged that their father was humiliated and forced to touch the groom’s feet to avoid conflict on the wedding day.

The family reported that the harassment did not cease after the wedding. Umesh Kumar Singh accused his daughter of enduring continuous mental torture at her in-laws’ home. He claimed that Shweta’s mother-in-law often involved other family members in humiliating her over dowry-related issues.

Additionally, the family alleged that Shweta’s sister-in-law, who resides in Noida, frequently interfered in domestic matters and used derogatory language against Shweta and her parents. They claimed that insulting comments about Shweta and her family were sometimes posted on social media.

Before her marriage, Shweta worked in the debit card department at HDFC Bank. Her family alleges that shortly after the engagement, she was pressured to leave her job. Although they were assured she could return to work later, disputes arose as her husband’s family wanted her to be a homemaker.

Komal stated that her sister gradually became isolated from her family. She claimed that Bhupendra restricted Shweta’s contact with her relatives and closely monitored her activities. Whenever Shweta visited her ill mother, it reportedly led to conflicts and unrest in her in-laws’ home.

The family revealed that just two hours before receiving the news of her death, Shweta spoke with her father. She also had a conversation with her sister about an hour prior. They noted that there was nothing unusual in Shweta’s behavior during those calls.

By the time the family arrived at the house, Shweta had already been taken to the hospital by her in-laws, where she was pronounced dead.

A case has been registered against members of the Singh family in Lucknow police. Bhupendra Singh and his father, Kaushalendra Singh, have been arrested, and questioning is ongoing.

The FIR names Bhupendra Singh, his parents, brother, wife, and sister as accused. They face charges under Section 80 (dowry death) and Section 85 (cruelty) of the Indian Penal Code, along with relevant sections of the Dowry Prohibition Act.

The post-mortem confirmed that Shweta died by hanging.

This case has once again highlighted the alarming rise in allegations of dowry harassment and suspicious deaths of married women across the country.

Recently, a similar incident occurred in Greater Noida, where 24-year-old Deepika Nagar died after falling from the third-floor roof of her in-laws’ home, with her family alleging repeated demands for dowry.

In another case, actress-model Dvisha Sharma, 33, was found dead in her in-laws’ home in Bhopal earlier this month. Her family accused her husband and mother-in-law of mental harassment and financial pressure, raising concerns about the investigation process.
