Betiah, August 29: A group of workers from West Champaran has finally returned home safely after being trapped by devastating floods in Nepal. After a two-day journey, they arrived late Friday evening, bringing tears of joy to their families. However, the relief is overshadowed by the ongoing worry for three missing workers who remain unaccounted for. Families are anxiously searching for them, hoping for their safe return.
The returning workers recounted the terrifying scenes of destruction in Nepal. They described how the floodwaters surged so rapidly that there was little time to react. One worker mentioned that the water rose nearly 20 feet.
Jabir Alam shared that he was sleeping with some friends when they heard a loud noise. Upon stepping outside, they saw the floodwaters rising quickly. It was only when a friend returned from getting medicine that they realized the danger. Others began shouting for them to flee to higher ground.
Jabir recounted that they barely had time to put on their slippers or clothes before they started running for their lives. About an hour later, when the water level decreased slightly, they attempted to search for their missing friends but found no trace of them. They searched the area extensively and eventually spent the night in a school. The next morning, they discovered several bodies nearby, but there was still no sign of their companions.
Salman Alam explained that before the flood, some of his friends had gone out while others were at work. His father needed medication, and one friend had gone to fetch it. Around 9:30 PM, they suddenly heard loud noises. When they stepped outside, they were met with a horrifying scene of smoke and rising water. The water was advancing rapidly. They quickly fled to higher ground with their companions. Later, they returned to search for relatives and friends, but everything had been swept away. They were eventually rescued by soldiers and taken to a school where they were provided food. The following day, they were airlifted to Bhatar and then transported to Kathmandu. From Kathmandu, they reserved a Tata Sumo and returned home via Birgunj.
Niyam Miyan stated that he had never witnessed such a catastrophic flood in Nepal before. His group included several workers, three of whom are still missing. He noted that the water rose so quickly that everyone had to flee to higher ground. After the water receded, they tried to find their friends but had no luck. Searches continued the next day without success.
Niyam Miyan mentioned that they were flown from Jhapa Baisi to Jhumche. After a brief stop, they were taken to a military camp in Bhatar. Officials assured them of safe passage. They then reached Kathmandu and spent the night with relatives. The next day, they departed for West Champaran via Birgunj.
