Panther Captured After Attacking Five People in Udaipur

Udaipur, August 30: A panther that terrorized the village of Khera in the Umarada area near Udaipur has been captured by the forest department after attacking five people over two days. The animal was trapped early Saturday morning and subsequently tranquilized before being sent to Sajjangarh Biological Park.

According to forest department officials, the panther returned to the same area early Friday. Its movements were recorded by camera traps, but despite being near the cage, it did not enter. The panther remained within a 1.5-kilometer radius of the attack site.

Thanks to the forest department’s efforts to relocate villagers to safe areas and maintain 24-hour surveillance, no new attacks occurred during this period. To monitor the panther’s activities, the department deployed an additional cage, several camera traps, and extra personnel.

Around 40 forest workers remained on-site under the leadership of Deputy Conservator of Forests (DCF) D.K. Tiwari. Officials inspected the attack area to identify potential escape routes for the panther. Sand was laid on the paths to track its footprints, confirming that it was confined to a limited area.

On Saturday, the panther was finally trapped in the cage. After being tranquilized, it was transported to Sajjangarh Biological Park.

In the attacks over the past two days, 45-year-old Logralal Meena lost his life, while 60-year-old Jagga Meena, 20-year-old Hitesh, 40-year-old Kalu, and 45-year-old Logri Bai sustained injuries. Officials report that all injured individuals are currently out of danger.

The first attack occurred late Tuesday evening, injuring one young man. Following this, villagers resumed normal activities, but around 6 AM Wednesday, the panther struck again, injuring three more people and spreading fear throughout the village. Later that day, around 1 PM, a woman was also attacked, escalating the situation.

In the wake of these continuous attacks, residents of Khera village evacuated and sought refuge in government buildings and relatives’ homes. Although villagers have not fully returned, the capture of the panther has brought a sense of relief and security to the area.
