Woman Arrested for Drugging and Robbing Elderly in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad, April 26: Authorities reported on Saturday that a 55-year-old woman has been arrested in Ahmedabad. She is accused of targeting elderly individuals living alone and robbing them. This arrest followed the death of an elderly man who allegedly consumed drug-laced buttermilk.

The Crime Branch apprehended Lataben, also known as Gulab and Lakdi Chauhan, in connection with an incident in the Dariyapur area. Initially considered a theft case, it has now escalated to involuntary manslaughter after Abdulbhai Sipahi, aged 81, died during treatment.

According to officials, the accused gained access to the elderly couple’s home under the pretense of cooking or delivering groceries. Investigators revealed that she exploited the couple’s age and isolation to win their trust before administering drug-laced buttermilk.

After the couple fell unconscious, she reportedly fled with approximately 4,000 rupees in cash. A Crime Branch officer stated, “Abdulbhai’s condition worsened due to the heavy dosage of the administered drug, leading to his death during treatment.”

The nature of the crime changed following the victim’s death. Police noted that the suspect operated in a similar manner; she identified elderly individuals or couples living alone and approached them under the guise of providing meals.

The officer added, “She gained their trust by offering to help with cooking, then drugged them before stealing.” The Crime Branch tracked her down using CCTV footage and human intelligence.

Based on specific information and records of similar crimes by repeat offenders, a raid was conducted in the Shahpur area, where she was arrested at her residence.

Police records indicate that Lataben has a criminal history, with at least nine offenses registered at various police stations in Ahmedabad, including Kadiya, Kalupur, Shahpur, Ghatlodia, Vejalpur, Madhupura, and Vadaj. These cases involve theft, burglary, and gambling-related offenses.

A case has been registered at the Dariyapur police station under the Indian Penal Code, 2023, including sections 105, 123, 329(2), and 303(2).

Authorities continue to investigate and urge citizens, especially the elderly, to remain vigilant and avoid accepting food or assistance from strangers.
