Wildfire Near Nevada-California Border Injures Six, Forces 42,000 to Evacuate

Los Angeles, August 24: A rapidly spreading wildfire near the Nevada-California border has left six people injured and prompted authorities to order the evacuation of approximately 42,000 residents. The fire, named the ‘Hawk Fire,’ ignited on Saturday and has already consumed over 13,000 acres (about 53 square kilometers), according to firefighting officials who held a press conference on Sunday. The situation remains out of control.

Among the injured are three civilians and three emergency service personnel. Additionally, around 45,000 individuals are in areas where they may receive evacuation warnings at any moment.

Officials have confirmed that several buildings and structures have been destroyed by the flames. On Sunday, nearly 10,000 electricity consumers in Washoe County were left without power. Reno, the largest city in Washoe County, is significantly affected.

Authorities have noted that the fire’s behavior is extremely dangerous and unusual, spreading rapidly due to strong winds and dry, combustible vegetation.

Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency in Washoe County on Saturday night. In a statement, he urged residents in affected areas to remain vigilant and follow local authorities’ instructions. “The situation is evolving rapidly. The state government is fully engaged, and we are deploying every possible resource to protect lives, secure communities, and keep citizens safe,” he said.

Governor Lombardo reiterated the urgency on social media Sunday morning, warning that conditions related to the fire are still changing quickly. He advised those in affected areas to stay alert and continuously seek updates.

Earlier in July, a wildfire in Southern California spread rapidly, reaching nearly 2,700 acres (about 10.9 square kilometers) amid a severe heatwave, forcing residents to evacuate to safer locations. This fire, known as the ‘Summit Fire,’ was reported around 1 PM local time on Friday in the small community of Lano, near the Los Angeles and San Bernardino County border.
