WHO Assures Public: Hantavirus is Not Another COVID Pandemic

New Delhi, May 9: The World Health Organization (WHO) has reassured the global community that there is no need to panic over the hantavirus. It is not a second COVID-19 pandemic.

WHO Secretary-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus advised people not to be alarmed in a message shared on social media. He acknowledged the ongoing concerns, stating, “I know you are worried.”

He emphasized, “The pain of 2020 is still fresh, and I do not forget it for a moment. However, I want you to trust me when I say this is not another COVID. The public health threat from hantavirus is currently low. My colleagues and I have made this clear, and I will reiterate it.”

The hantavirus strain found on the MV Hondius has led to a total of eight reported cases, with three fatalities. The WHO chief expressed condolences, saying, “This is serious. Three lives have been lost, and our thoughts are with their families. Currently, there are no new cases reported on the ship. A WHO expert is onboard, and all necessary medical facilities are available.”

Spanish authorities have developed a cautious, step-by-step plan: passengers will be disembarked at the industrial port of Granadilla, away from residential areas, in secure vehicles through a fully enclosed corridor, and sent directly back to their home countries.

Ghebreyesus thanked Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez for his decision to anchor the ship in Spain, viewing it as an example of solidarity and moral duty. He noted, “The request from WHO to Spain was not made lightly. This decision was made in full accordance with international health regulations.”

Approximately 150 people from 23 countries have been at sea for weeks, with many feeling distressed and all eager to return home.

He added, “Tenerife was chosen due to its medical capacity, infrastructure, and humanity, which can keep people safe.”

The ship’s captain, Jan Dobrogowski, along with the crew and cruise company, has shown positivity and support during this challenging time.

He concluded, “On behalf of the World Health Organization and all passengers and their families worldwide, I thank the people of Tenerife and everyone involved.”
