Kolkata, May 12: Samik Bhattacharya, the state president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and a member of the Rajya Sabha, has indicated that the new government in West Bengal may revise its land policy to encourage investment.
Speaking at a gathering of business leaders organized by the Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Bhattacharya stated, “During the 15 years of Trinamool Congress rule, there has been no new investment in the state. In contrast, entrepreneurs and traders from West Bengal have preferred to invest in other states. The previous state government provided no support to attract significant investments, but the new government will make every effort to draw in investments. There is an urgent need to amend the state’s land policy to facilitate investment.”
After coming to power in 2011, the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress denied any role for the state in land acquisition for large industries, ending decades of Left Front governance.
This decision faced criticism from industry experts and economic analysts, who argued that such a policy would discourage investment in the manufacturing sector. Despite these negative assessments, Banerjee remained steadfast in her stance against allowing state administration to facilitate land acquisition for industrial purposes.
Bhattacharya’s remarks at the Chamber of Commerce meeting have raised hopes for changes in the state’s land policy to attract large investments. He also noted that the deteriorating law and order situation during the Trinamool Congress’s previous tenure was another barrier for entrepreneurs considering investment in the state.
“I want to assure you that the situation will improve with the new government. I must clarify that I am not an official in the new state government, so I am not speaking on their behalf. However, I assure you that the new government will make every possible effort to attract investments and ensure job creation. There was a climate of fear that made entrepreneurs hesitant to invest in the state, but that fear has now dissipated. I am confident that entrepreneurs will invest in West Bengal without any fear,” Bhattacharya concluded.
