
Kolkata, August 17: The Special Task Force (STF) of West Bengal Police has arrested two individuals for allegedly attempting to establish a jihadi module inspired by Al-Qaeda in the state.
Based on intelligence, STF officials conducted raids on Sunday in the Bhangar and Birla Pur areas of the South 24 Parganas district. Janadul Beg was arrested from Bhangar, while Shafiq Sheikh was apprehended in Birla Pur.
According to police reports, the duo is accused of spreading anti-national propaganda on social media. A complaint was filed at the Nodakhali police station, prompting the STF to initiate an investigation.
Sources within the investigation team revealed that the accused had created two social media pages named ‘Mughalizam’ and ‘Jehad ki Sabibillah.’ They allegedly used these platforms to disseminate anti-national content.
The arrested individuals were reportedly attempting to expand their organization through social media. They are accused of trying to form a module inspired by the ideology of the terrorist group Al-Qaeda. Additionally, they sought to recruit youth via social media.
Intelligence sources indicate that they were also attempting to acquire weapons.
Recently, the state STF conducted a raid in the East Bardhaman district, leading to the arrest of a young man named Hamim Mandal, who is alleged to have connections with the Pakistani intelligence agency ISI and gangster Shahzad Bhatti.
Last week, the STF apprehended a Pakistani national, Wahab Alam, also known as Rana Rauf, from Habra in North 24 Parganas. Following his interrogation, another individual named Mohammad Ijaz was arrested from the Topsia area of Kolkata.
Initially, it was believed that Ijaz worked as an associate of Rana. This latest operation has resulted in the arrest of two individuals for attempting to establish a jihadi module.
