New Delhi, October 6 (Daily Kiran) : Opposition MPs from the INDIA coalition, led by Rahul Gandhi, staged a protest near the Election Commission of India (ECI) office in New Delhi on October 6. The demonstration took place just meters away from the Akashvani Bhawan complex.
Gandhi, along with Congress General Secretary K.C. Venugopal and MPs Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Pawan Khera, and Imran Pratapgarhi, were seen sitting under a tree at the protest site. They attempted to push through the gates of the institution to reach the ECI headquarters, which is about 300 meters away. According to sources, a call was made from Akashvani Bhawan reporting that Rahul Gandhi had forcibly entered the premises.
Speaking to the media, Rahul Gandhi expressed frustration, stating, “Three hundred MPs have been stopped here, and then they have made us sit. The Election Commission is just 50 yards away. They are not allowing us to go there. I don’t understand what the problem is. The ECI’s job is to conduct elections properly. Three hundred MPs want to meet Gyanesh Kumar, and he is scared. So, I don’t know what is happening in the country. If representatives cannot meet the Election Commission, what is the meaning of democracy?”
Gandhi further asserted, “What has been done to our country is treason, and no one will escape responsibility. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, Mohan Bhagwat, and Gyanesh Kumar have destroyed democracy in the country. They have hijacked the nation with ‘vote theft.’ No one will be spared; action will be taken against all.”
Pawan Khera also addressed the media, stating, “The Election Commission is right next to us, yet the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha is being prevented from going there. Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, Venugopal, Channi, Imran Pratapgarhi, and all of us are protesting inside Akashvani Bhawan.”
He emphasized that the ECI office is only about 100 meters away, and when opposition leaders attempted to submit a memorandum, they were stopped forcefully. “This is the state of democracy in the capital of the country,” he added.
Carrying flags and banners reading “Save Democracy,” the INDIA coalition MPs marched towards the ECI headquarters, chanting slogans against the Chief Election Commissioner, the BJP, and the RSS. In response to the protest, Delhi police and other security forces were put on high alert, with barricades set up outside the ECI office.
As they attempted to advance towards the ECI, Rahul Gandhi was blocked by multiple layers of police barricades. In a show of defiance, he climbed over one barricade and waved a large national flag, prompting cheers from the gathered INDIA bloc leaders and supporters.
Additionally, Rahul Gandhi shared a video on the social media platform X, stating, “Opposition MPs from the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha want to enter the Election Commission office. We want to question Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar about vote theft. We have been stopped from going to the ECI office. We represent millions of Indians. Why is the Election Commissioner not meeting us? Why is the police stopping and threatening us?”
