Mumbai, July 21: Renowned director Priyadarshan has made his mark in various film genres, including comedy, drama, and thrillers, delivering memorable films to audiences. His movie ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa’ remains one of the most popular films in Hindi cinema. While often categorized as a horror-comedy, Priyadarshan does not see it that way. He emphasizes that the film’s core is not fear but rather the human mind and psychology, thus classifying it as a psychological thriller.
In a recent conversation, Priyadarshan stated, “We created ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa’ while pioneering the horror-comedy genre. Others followed suit, but I do not consider ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa’ a horror film. It was not made as a scary story; rather, it is a psychological thriller that balances mystery, emotions, and humor.”
Explaining the film’s genre, Priyadarshan noted, “A touch of humor amidst a tense narrative can profoundly impact the audience. When viewers watch a serious or frightening story in theaters, even a brief moment of comedy can be quite effective.”
He also shared insights on the challenges of creating a pure comedy film. “Making a comedy film is one of the most difficult tasks. Keeping the audience laughing consistently is not easy, as the impact of the same joke or scene can diminish with repetition.”
Priyadarshan added, “I have struggled while making comedy films. Often, when I rewatch my own successful films, I don’t find them funny anymore. It feels like the effect has faded. However, witnessing the audience’s reaction in theaters reveals that the experience is different.”
He concluded, “Successfully blending horror and comedy is a significant challenge. Whenever I attempt to merge fear and humor, I feel a unique thrill myself. I can say it is a very tough job.”
