West Bengal Government Orders Reopening of Post-Election Violence Cases

Kolkata, May 13: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government, led by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, has issued an order to reopen cases related to violence that occurred after the 2021 Assembly elections in West Bengal.

A senior government official stated on Wednesday that strict action against animal trafficking has also been mandated.

The order from the state government highlights, “There are serious complaints regarding the investigation of post-election violence. A review of old cases of political violence from the 2021 Assembly elections should be conducted, and appropriate legal action must follow.”

The directive further states, “Final reports (FRTs) related to cases of violence after the 2021 elections should be carefully reviewed, and action should be taken where necessary. If any negligence is found during the investigation, cases should be reopened for a thorough inquiry.”

The government has indicated that new cases may be registered where specific incidents have not been documented, especially in cases where preliminary investigations reveal cognizable offenses.

The order mandates that the Superintendent of Police (SP) and Commissioner of Police (CP) must personally oversee this process. Regular monitoring of the investigation and trial of these cases should occur after charge sheets are filed.

Post-election violence erupted in several areas following the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections. The Trinamool Congress retained power by defeating the BJP, which emerged as the main opposition party by winning 77 seats, a significant increase from just three seats in 2016.

Allegations of large-scale violence against BJP workers by ruling party activists have surfaced, including incidents of murder, rape, vandalism, and attacks on BJP workers and their families. The matter reached the Calcutta High Court, which ordered a CBI investigation into serious incidents of murder and rape.

However, many cases remain ongoing, and victims are still awaiting justice. The initiative to reopen these cases comes after a change in government in West Bengal.
