Kolkata, May 12: The West Bengal government has directed the police to file a First Information Report (FIR) regarding a fire incident that occurred in the Tiljala area of East Kolkata on Tuesday morning. Tragically, two individuals lost their lives in this incident.

In response to the fire, the state government has also formed a committee to conduct a thorough survey of the site and submit a report by Wednesday morning.

The government’s order stated, “Two people died in the fire, and five others suffered severe burns. Given the significant loss of life and property, the Kolkata police have been instructed to file a specific FIR immediately.”

The order further mentioned, “Additionally, a departmental committee comprising the following officials has been established to conduct a detailed survey of the incident site and examine all relevant documents. The committee will carry out a comprehensive investigation and submit its report to the undersigned by 11:00 AM on May 13.”

It is noteworthy that the fire broke out in a multi-story building on GJ Khan Road in East Kolkata’s Tiljala area, resulting in two fatalities and five individuals being hospitalized for treatment.

According to local residents, the fire ignited on the second floor of the four-story building located at 50/1 GJ Khan Road. The flames spread rapidly, engulfing the area in thick black smoke. Residents promptly alerted the fire department, and four fire engines arrived sequentially at the scene.

The blaze was so intense that seven individuals trapped inside the room sought refuge in the bathroom. Unfortunately, they faced a suffocating situation due to the thick smoke. Firefighters made every effort to rescue them, but it was unsuccessful. Eventually, all were retrieved in critical condition and transported to Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital, where doctors pronounced two of them dead.

According to the fire department, both deaths were attributed to severe respiratory distress. The condition of the remaining five individuals is also critical, raising concerns that the death toll may increase. However, the cause of the fire remains unclear at this time.
