Midnapore, March 17: The countdown to the West Bengal Assembly elections has begun. The Election Commission has announced that the elections will be conducted in two phases. Midnapore District Magistrate Bijin Krishna provided critical updates regarding the upcoming elections.
In a press briefing, the District Magistrate revealed that voting for 15 assembly constituencies will take place on April 23. The official notification will be issued on March 30. The nomination process will run from March 30 to April 6, with ballot verification scheduled for April 7. The final date for nominations is April 9, and the counting of votes will occur on May 4.
Following the announcement of the election dates, officials have started preparations. Political parties are also gearing up for the contest. This time, the BJP is claiming a change in West Bengal, while the ruling TMC is striving for a comeback. Just a day before the announcement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited West Bengal, inaugurating and laying the foundation for several projects. During his visit, he urged the public to oust the TMC from power.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is not holding back in her criticism of the BJP. Recently, she staged a protest against the Election Commission. The TMC leader raised several questions regarding the SIR (State Information Report) related to the elections. In response, the BJP has fielded Suvendu Adhikari as a candidate from two constituencies to challenge Banerjee. In the previous election, Adhikari defeated Chief Minister Banerjee in Nandigram by nearly 2,000 votes.
On Monday, the BJP released its first list of candidates, announcing 144 names. The party has nominated several prominent leaders, including Agnimitra Paul from Asansol South, Sukumar Roy from Cooch Behar North (Scheduled Caste), Savitri Barman from Sitalkuchi (Scheduled Caste), and Ajay Roy from Dinahata.
