
Kolkata, May 30: A sudden and severe storm hit West Bengal on Friday afternoon, causing significant destruction. Tragically, seven people lost their lives due to this natural disaster. In response, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced a compensation of ₹4 lakh for the families of the deceased.
The Chief Minister explained that these fatalities were caused by incidents such as lightning strikes, electrocution, and building collapses. The affected areas include Kolkata, Howrah, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Hooghly, and Purulia. All deceased individuals have been sent for post-mortem examinations.
During a media briefing on Friday evening, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari emphasized that the state government is prioritizing the treatment of the injured. He also mentioned that financial assistance would be provided to those injured in the storm, as well as to families whose homes were damaged.
He stated, “No amount of money can replace a life, but it is the government’s responsibility to stand by the affected families during such difficult times.”
Adhikari revealed that a team led by Minister Agnimitra Paul has been tasked with monitoring the situation regarding upcoming Kalbaishakhi (Nor’wester) storms this season. Officials and staff from the state disaster management department have also been placed on high alert.
The sudden storm had the most severe impact in the southern districts of Bengal. Areas such as South and North 24 Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly, West and East Medinipur, Purulia, and the capital Kolkata experienced strong winds and heavy rainfall, disrupting daily life.
In Kolkata, several trees were uprooted, affecting traffic flow. Internet services were temporarily disrupted in some areas. To restore normalcy, teams from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation are actively engaged in clearing fallen trees and reopening roads.
