New Delhi, June 19: The central government has approved large-scale purchases of pulses and oilseeds at minimum support prices (MSP) in four states. This initiative aims to ensure farmers benefit from MSP and alleviate price pressures in the market.
According to Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, the purchases will be conducted under the Price Support Scheme (PSS) in Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, and Haryana. This will help farmers receive fair prices for their produce, preventing them from having to sell at lower rates due to market pressures.
Uttar Pradesh stands to gain the most from this scheme. For the ‘Summer 2026’ season, the state has received approval for the purchase of 48,298 metric tons of moong, 97,970 metric tons of urad, and 41,718 metric tons of peanuts.
The total MSP value of these approvals exceeds ₹1,490 crores. According to the minister, this decision will provide significant support to pulse and oilseed-producing farmers in the state.
Chouhan also approved the purchase of 18,250 metric tons of moong for Gujarat for the Summer 2026 season. This will also be conducted under the Price Support Scheme, with a total MSP value exceeding ₹160 crores, helping moong farmers in the state secure better market prices.
For Tamil Nadu, the minister increased the purchase limit for moong under the Rabi marketing season 2025-26 from 885 metric tons to 990 metric tons. An additional 105 metric tons of moong will be purchased, with a total MSP value of ₹8.68 crores, directly benefiting farmers in the state.
In Haryana, 2,115 metric tons of moong have been approved for purchase for the Summer 2026 season. The total MSP value of this purchase will exceed ₹18 crores. An official statement noted that this step will play a crucial role in providing price support to farmers in the state.
