Kolkata, August 22: West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari declared on Saturday evening his firm commitment to eradicate anti-national activities at Jadavpur University (JU), located in South Kolkata. He emphasized the need to instill a sense of nationalism “at all costs” within the university.
The Chief Minister pointed out that students are not allowed to sing “Vande Mataram” on campus, the national flag is not hoisted, and education department officials are denied entry. He also noted the absence of CCTV cameras on the premises. “We will establish nationalism both inside and outside Jadavpur,” he stated, referencing two clashes between the CPI(M)-affiliated student organization SFI and ABVP.
Adhikari was addressing an event related to the Annapurna scheme in his constituency of Bhawanipur. During his speech, he sharply criticized those trolling the state government and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) regarding the clashes that occurred alongside fines.
“I have seen many people crying on social media about the fines related to the clashes. They should listen: if they want to stay in this state, they must sing ‘Vande Mataram.’ There can be no compromise on patriotism, nationalism, or allegiance to the state. It is our duty to silence those who chant ‘Kashmir maange azaadi.’ If you want to live in this state, you must sing ‘Vande Mataram.’ That is the final decision,” he asserted.
According to him, despite some media outlets showing sympathy towards those who do not celebrate January 26 or August 15, the state government will not back down from its stance.
He concluded by stating that the state government is dedicated to realizing the dream of Syama Prasad Mukherjee, asserting that there will be no compromise on nationalism and traditional culture.
