Beijing, March 26: On March 25, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi delivered a video address to the third session of the preparatory committee for the Marine Biodiversity Agreement.
He emphasized that the completion and implementation of this agreement represent a victory for multilateralism and a significant milestone in global ocean governance. Effective and comprehensive execution of this agreement is crucial for the shared interests of all humanity.
Wang Yi stated that China has been a strong supporter, protector, and participant in the United Nations. Amidst the current complex and unstable international circumstances, China firmly supports the central role of the UN and remains a vital pillar of multilateralism.
He also highlighted China’s long and prosperous maritime civilization. Approximately 600 years ago, Chinese navigator Zheng He undertook seven maritime voyages, fostering friendly relations and exchanges with various countries. Today, China is committed to modernization while equally prioritizing ocean security and sustainable use, striving to build a community with a shared future for life on Earth.
Furthermore, he asserted that China’s willingness and capability to contribute to global ocean governance are robust. China has proposed establishing the secretariat for the Marine Biodiversity Agreement in Xiamen, Fujian Province, reflecting its responsibilities as a major developing country. China is prepared to work with all parties to promote the effective implementation of this agreement and to create a more equitable and balanced global ocean governance system.
