New Delhi, September 18 (Daily Kiran) : Voting for the Delhi University Student Union (DUSU) elections began early Friday morning, with students heading to various colleges and the North Campus to cast their votes for their preferred candidates. A significant turnout was observed in several colleges, while others saw students arriving gradually. After the first phase of voting, the second phase will commence in the afternoon.
This year, a total of 20 candidates are contesting for four major positions: President, Vice President, Secretary, and Joint Secretary. Voting began at 8:30 AM in morning colleges and will continue until 1 PM. The afternoon colleges will start their voting at 3 PM, running until 7:30 PM. The university administration has assured that all preparations for the voting process are complete, and stringent security measures are in place throughout the campus.
In the presidential race, seven candidates are vying for the top position, while five are competing for Vice President, and four candidates each are running for Secretary and Joint Secretary. The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has nominated Yash Dabas for President, while the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) has put forward Vijay Shankar Meena as their candidate. A coalition of leftist student organizations is also contesting for all four key positions.
The elections are expected to be fiercely contested, with key issues such as hostel facilities, affordable education, and campus safety taking center stage during the campaign. Each student organization has presented its agenda based on these topics. Students will determine the leadership of the student union for the upcoming term through their votes. To prevent any disruptions during the voting process, the Delhi Police and university administration have implemented robust security arrangements.
Barricades have been set up outside college campuses, and entry is restricted to students with valid identification. Following strict comments from the Delhi High Court regarding violence and violations of the Lyngdoh Committee’s guidelines, the administration is exercising heightened vigilance. The emphasis is on conducting a peaceful and transparent voting process. Approximately 1,000 electronic voting machines will be used for the DUSU and college union elections.
Additionally, around 300 central processing units will be deployed, with some student union elections in 8 to 10 colleges being conducted via ballot paper. All machines will be sealed immediately after voting concludes. Counting of the votes will begin at 8:30 AM on Saturday, September 19, with results expected to be announced by noon. This will reveal who will lead the Delhi University Student Union in the next term.
