New Delhi, September 17 (Daily Kiran) : The Delhi High Court has voiced serious concerns regarding the violence that occurred during the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) election campaigning at the university’s North Campus. The court has requested reports from DUSU, the Delhi police, and the government by Friday.
The court issued a stern warning, stating that if it is not satisfied with the actions taken, it may halt the counting of votes and the announcement of results. In its remarks, the court emphasized that “democracy cannot be transformed into a criminal society.” However, it has not yet imposed a ban on the vote counting scheduled for Friday.
The campaigning for the DUSU elections concluded on September 16, with voting set for September 18 and counting on September 19. Tensions escalated on Wednesday night when clashes broke out between two student factions on the North Campus. The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) accused each other of attacking members from opposing groups at various locations.
The ABVP alleged that NSUI activists assaulted their members at a house near Hari Mandir in Delhi University while they were holding a peaceful meeting, which included a female student. The ABVP claims that one of the attackers has been handed over to the police.
