Veteran BJP Leader Balbir Punj Passes Away, Leaving a Legacy in Journalism and Politics

New Delhi, April 18: Balbir Punj, a senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and former vice president, passed away on Saturday evening. His death marks the end of a long and impactful career in politics, journalism, and public discourse.

Punj was a significant figure in the BJP’s intellectual and policy-making circles. He also served as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha, where he made substantial contributions to debates on social, economic, and political issues.

Before entering politics, Punj had a distinguished career in journalism. He began his professional journey in 1971 with the launch of the daily newspaper ‘The Motherland.’ In 1974, he joined the Financial Express, where he worked for over two decades until 1996. He was known for his sharp analysis and commentary. Subsequently, he served as the executive editor of ‘The Observer of Business and Politics’ from May 1996 to March 2000.

Punj was actively involved in journalism institutions as well. He served as the president of the Delhi Journalists’ Association for two consecutive terms from 1989 to 1991 and was the general secretary of the National Union of Journalists from 1993 to 1995. His contributions to media education were notable; he chaired the Southeast Asian Media Training Organization, IIMC, until March 2000.

In public service, Punj held several important roles, including chairman of the National Youth Commission and a member of the Delhi Finance Commission during 1996-97. His work reflected a steadfast commitment to governance and youth development.

As a writer and columnist, he remained active until his final days, contributing extensively to Hindi and English newspapers and magazines. In recognition of his lifelong contributions, he was awarded the Dev Rishi Narad Lifetime Achievement Award on May 18, 2022. His passing marks the loss of an experienced journalist, thinker, and political figure.
