Meghalaya Chief Minister Lays Foundation Stone for Multi-Story Building in Tura

Shillong, April 19: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma laid the foundation stone for a multi-story building in Dakopgre, West Garo Hills, on Saturday. He described this project as a long-standing aspiration of the local community and reaffirmed the government’s focus on inclusive development.

Addressing a gathering of community members, officials, and local leaders, Sangma stated that this initiative symbolizes the changes occurring in the state over the past eight years. He expressed enthusiasm about the development momentum in Tura, highlighting the collaborative efforts made with his colleagues and officials to bring about clear and meaningful change.

The Chief Minister emphasized that the proposed facility should serve as a vibrant community center for youth and women. He suggested that the building include spaces for skill development programs, indoor games, music, and other activities, as well as coaching centers and study facilities.

Highlighting the need for women’s empowerment, he called for training initiatives in sewing, handicrafts, and food processing. Sangma also pointed out major infrastructure projects, including the PA Sangma Integrated Sports Complex, an additional secretariat, and an upcoming five-star hotel, which he believes will significantly boost tourism and economic activities in the region.

He announced beautification plans for PA Sangma Road, which will include street lighting, CCTV installation, landscaping, and green spaces. Regarding connectivity, the Chief Minister mentioned the ongoing development of Baljek Airport, stating that its completion will further accelerate development in Tura and surrounding areas.

Sangma noted that the city is set to host six events of the 2027 National Games, with the closing ceremony also taking place there, which he termed a historic event for Meghalaya. He revealed that ₹52 lakh has been approved for this project, jointly funded by the Chief Minister’s Special Development Fund and the Meghalaya Basin Development Authority. He urged stakeholders to maintain quality standards during construction.

Calling for active public participation, he stressed the importance of cooperation between citizens and the government to ensure sustainable development and the successful organization of major events.

The event was attended by local leaders, community members, and dignitaries, with cultural presentations and community programs held to mark the occasion.
