New Delhi, April 19: Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent address to the nation. He accused PM Modi of transforming an official address into a political speech filled with mudslinging and outright lies.
In a post on the social media platform ‘X’, Kharge stated, “A desperate and disheartened PM Modi, who has nothing substantial to show for the last 12 years, has turned his address to the nation into a political speech. The code of conduct is already in effect, yet PM Modi misused government machinery to attack his opponents. This is a gross insult to democracy and the Constitution of India.”
Kharge pointed out that PM Modi mentioned Congress 59 times in his speech, while women were mentioned only a few times. This, he argued, clearly indicates the government’s priorities. He claimed that women are not a priority for the BJP; rather, Congress stands with women.
He reminded that Congress has always supported women’s reservation. In 2010, the Women’s Reservation Bill was passed in the Rajya Sabha to prevent it from lapsing. However, the BJP failed to pass that bill in the Lok Sabha. Congress also supported the bill introduced in 2023. Kharge emphasized that the original bill still exists and was notified on April 16.
Kharge demanded that the government immediately implement 33 percent reservation for women in the current 543 Lok Sabha seats under the 2023 law. He urged the government to stop linking the delimitation bills with the women’s reservation bill, clarifying that the delimitation bill is not an amendment to the women’s reservation.
Highlighting Congress’s achievements, Kharge mentioned significant historical laws passed by the party, including the Green Revolution, White Revolution, space program, nuclear power, the 1991 economic liberalization, RTI, RTE, MGNREGA, and the Food Security Act. He also referenced women-friendly laws such as the Hindu Code Bill, workplace sexual harassment laws, domestic violence laws, and reforms in criminal laws.
Kharge accused the BJP of being anti-women in both actions and attitudes. He cited cases involving Hathras, Unnao, female wrestlers from Haryana, Bilkis Bano, and the protection of rapists within the BJP. Citing NCRB data, he noted that crimes against women are highest in BJP-ruled states.
In conclusion, Kharge stated that after 12.5 years in power, the government has no solutions for inflation, a deteriorating economy, or the public’s suffering.
