Verdict Delayed in Ankit Sharma Murder Case Linked to Delhi Riots

New Delhi, June 4: The Karkardooma Court has postponed its decision in the high-profile murder case of Intelligence Bureau (IB) officer Ankit Sharma, who was killed during the riots in northeast Delhi in 2020. The court will now announce its verdict on June 11.

A total of 11 accused, including former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillor Tahir Hussain, are facing charges in this case. The court was scheduled to deliver its judgment on Thursday, but the hearing has been rescheduled for June 11.

This case pertains to the violence that erupted in February 2020 in northeast Delhi, during which Ankit Sharma’s body was discovered in a drain in the Khajuri Khas area on February 26, 2020.

The prosecution alleges that Tahir Hussain and the other accused were part of an unlawful assembly and conspiracy that led to Ankit Sharma’s murder during the riots. An FIR was registered on February 26, 2020, based on a complaint filed by Ankit Sharma’s father, Ravinder Kumar.

According to the complaint, Ankit Sharma had gone out to buy household items on February 25 but did not return. Local residents later reported that a young man had been thrown into a drain from the Chand Bagh area. Subsequently, Ankit Sharma’s body was recovered from the drain.

In March 2023, the Karkardooma Court framed serious charges against all 11 accused, including rioting, rioting with a deadly weapon, promoting enmity between different communities, murder, and criminal conspiracy. Tahir Hussain faces additional charges under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

During the trial, the court noted that Tahir Hussain allegedly incited the mob to target Hindus. Additionally, the Delhi High Court had previously rejected Tahir Hussain’s bail application.

All eyes are now on June 11, when the court will deliver its final verdict in this widely discussed murder case.
