
New Delhi, March 3: The Rashtriya Lok Morcha has officially announced its national president, Upendra Kushwaha, as the NDA-supported candidate for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections. This information was shared by the party’s state spokesperson, Nitin Bharti.
In a press release issued on Tuesday, Bharti stated that this decision was made after discussions with the NDA leadership. He also mentioned that Kushwaha will file his nomination on March 5.
The release highlighted, “Upendra Kushwaha, the national president of the Rashtriya Lok Morcha, has been officially declared the party’s candidate for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections. He will file his nomination as the NDA-supported candidate. This decision was reached following consultations and dialogue with the top NDA leadership. Kushwaha will submit his nomination in the Bihar Assembly on March 5, with leaders from all NDA allied parties present at the event.”
Additionally, the BJP has released a list of nine candidates, including its national president Nitin Naveen. The party has announced candidates from various states: Nitin Naveen and Shivesh Kumar from Bihar, Terash Gowala and Jogen Mohan from Assam, Lakshmi Verma from Chhattisgarh, Sanjay Bhatia from Haryana, Manmohan Samal and Sujit Kumar from Odisha, and Rahul Sinha from West Bengal.
Earlier, on February 18, the Election Commission of India (ECI) announced the schedule for the biennial elections to fill 37 vacant seats in the Rajya Sabha from 10 states. According to the commission, voting will take place on March 16 from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with counting occurring the same day at 5:00 PM. The terms of 37 elected members from 10 states will end in April 2026. In light of the upcoming vacancies, the commission has prepared a detailed timeline for the electoral process.
The election notification was issued on February 26, with the last date for filing nominations set for March 5. The scrutiny of nomination papers will occur on March 6, and candidates will have the option to withdraw their nominations until March 9. The commission clarified that only a specific purple pen, provided by the returning officer, will be valid for marking preferences on the ballots.
The commission emphasized the need to strictly adhere to all election-related guidelines, ensuring that the entire process is completed within the stipulated timeframe to maintain the integrity of the Rajya Sabha elections.
