Ayushman Bharat Scheme Gives New Life to Gujarats Jaykishan Kapadia

Jaykishan Kapadia from Gujarat regains mobility and hope thanks to the Ayushman Bharat scheme, transforming his life after years of struggle.

Gandhinagar, November 3 (Daily Kiran) : Jaykishan Kapadia, a 32-year-old resident of Mehsana, Gujarat, faced a life-changing journey that began when he was confined to a wheelchair. Once resigned to a life of limitations, Jaykishan found renewed hope through the Ayushman Bharat scheme, which has been instrumental in restoring his health and mobility.

The Ayushman Bharat initiative, launched by the central government to provide better healthcare for economically disadvantaged groups, proved to be a lifesaver for Jaykishan. After years of battling health issues, he is now eager to find a job and support his mother.

Jaykishan’s struggles began at the age of 17 when he was diagnosed with kidney disease. His mother donated one of her kidneys to save him, and in 2012, he underwent a successful transplant. However, long-term steroid use post-surgery led to severe joint deterioration, leaving him unable to perform daily tasks and entirely dependent on a wheelchair. Financial constraints made it difficult to continue his treatment, and at one point, his weight plummeted to just 30-35 kilograms.

Three years ago, Jaykishan’s mother admitted him to the Government Spine Institute in Ahmedabad. There, Dr. Piyush Mittal and his team began treating him under the Ayushman Bharat scheme. Jaykishan underwent four surgeries, including hip joint replacements, and commenced a rigorous rehabilitation program aimed at helping him stand and walk again.

Dr. Mittal recalled Jaykishan’s critical condition upon his arrival at the institute. He was not only wheelchair-bound but also unable to get out of bed, with a dangerously low weight and weakened bones. The treatment plan involved physical therapy, necessary medications, and a focus on improving his mental health.

Today, Jaykishan can stand and walk independently. Reflecting on his journey, he expressed immense gratitude for the Ayushman Bharat scheme. “My mother brought me to the hospital in a wheelchair. At that time, I couldn’t even stand properly. The doctors here performed my surgeries, first on one leg and then on the other. Now, I feel much better. There was a time when I thought I would never walk again, but seeing my progress is truly uplifting,” he shared.

Jaykishan’s story is a testament to the transformative power of healthcare initiatives aimed at uplifting the underprivileged.
