UN Chief Condemns Pakistani Airstrike, Calls for Investigation into Afghan Hospital Attack

New Delhi, March 19: United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has strongly condemned the recent Pakistani airstrike on a hospital in Kabul, demanding an independent and impartial investigation into the incident.

Farhan Haq, the Deputy Spokesperson for the Secretary-General, stated on Wednesday that Guterres emphasized the necessity of safeguarding health facilities, including patients and medical staff, in accordance with international law.

According to the Taliban government in Afghanistan, the airstrike, which occurred on the night of March 18, targeted a drug rehabilitation hospital, resulting in over 400 fatalities. This incident is perceived as escalating tensions in the region.

The United Nations reports that the World Health Organization has indicated that at least 10 health centers have been damaged due to airstrikes.

The Secretary-General has urged all parties to reduce violence and implement an immediate ceasefire. He stressed the importance of adhering to international humanitarian law and ensuring the safety of civilians.

UN assessments indicate that since March 6, airstrikes and cross-border attacks have affected at least 10 provinces, including Kabul. Approximately 115,000 people have been displaced, over 300 shelters have been destroyed or damaged, and around 160,000 individuals are facing food insecurity.

Guterres welcomed the temporary ceasefire between Pakistan and Afghanistan during Eid and expressed hope for its continuation.
