Washington, March 19: CIA Director John Ratcliffe disclosed on Wednesday that Iran is actively seeking intelligence assistance from U.S. adversaries. This revelation highlights a new dimension in the ongoing conflict, as Tehran looks outward for strategic support.
During a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing on global threats, Ratcliffe stated, “Iran is requesting intelligence help from Russia, China, and other U.S. adversaries. We can discuss whether these nations are providing assistance in a classified session.”
His comments came as lawmakers questioned intelligence officials about the evolving scope of the Iran conflict and the risks of involving major powers.
Ratcliffe emphasized that Iran remains a persistent threat and dismissed suggestions that Tehran has scaled back its ambitions. When asked if Iran had halted its nuclear or missile programs, Ratcliffe responded with a firm no, indicating that intelligence suggests otherwise.
He also expressed concerns regarding Iran’s missile program, warning that its technological advancements could eventually enhance its reach. He noted that Tehran is gaining experience with larger, more powerful booster technologies through its so-called space launch vehicle program.
“If allowed to continue unchecked, yes, Senator, they will have the capability to launch missiles at continental America,” he stated. He further added, “Weakening Iran’s missile production capabilities under Operation Epic Fury is crucial for our national security.”
Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard informed the panel that the intelligence community has been closely monitoring the risks posed by Iran and has provided periodic assessments to policymakers.
She remarked, “The intelligence community (IC) has always taken the threats from Iran’s missile capabilities very seriously, as well as the risks posed to our American troops deployed in the region.”
Gabbard also referred to longstanding intelligence assessments regarding Iran’s ability to disrupt global energy flows. “Those of us sitting at this table can point out that historically, Iranians have always threatened to use their control over the Strait of Hormuz.”
She added that the intelligence community has consistently provided information related to this operation to aid decision-making.
Ratcliffe mentioned that Iran has also devised plans to target U.S. interests in the region. “Iran had specific plans to attack U.S. interests at energy sites throughout the region.”
He noted that measures for “military and personnel security” had already been implemented prior to Operation Epic Fury.
This discussion reflects growing concerns among lawmakers that if Iran increases coordination with countries like Russia and China, the conflict could escalate further.
Additionally, intelligence officials maintained that the United States had already anticipated key elements of Iran’s response.
Gabbard reiterated that the intelligence community continues to assess potential and existing threats in the region and has provided those evaluations to policymakers and decision-makers.
In response to questions, Ratcliffe reiterated that Iran has long posed a consistent threat to the United States and currently presents an immediate danger, underscoring the stakes for national security as the situation continues to evolve.
