Mizoram Municipal Corporation Elections Scheduled for April 21

Aizawl, March 19: The Mizoram State Election Commission (SEC) announced on Wednesday that elections for the 19-member Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) will take place on April 21.

State Election Commissioner H. Lalthanhliana revealed the election schedule, stating that the official notification for the AMC elections was issued on Wednesday.

The deadline for filing nominations is set for March 25. Verification of nominations and allocation of election symbols will occur on March 27, while the last date for withdrawing candidacies is March 30. Votes will be counted on April 27.

Although the current municipal term ended on March 1, the SEC postponed the election process due to administrative reasons, including the state assembly’s budget session and ongoing state board examinations. The budget session concluded on March 16.

The main opposition party, the Mizo National Front (MNF), has announced candidates for all 19 seats, while the Congress party has released a list of names for 13 constituencies. The ruling party, Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), led by Chief Minister Lalduhoma, has yet to announce its candidates.

According to SEC officials, over 239,000 voters, including 126,000 women, are eligible to cast their votes in the municipal elections.

In the previous AMC elections held in February 2021, the MNF secured a majority with 11 seats, followed by the ZPM with 6 seats, and the Congress winning 2 seats.

The SEC has also issued a Model Code of Conduct (MCC) for political parties and candidates. According to the official notification, the MCC became effective from the date of the election announcement and will remain in force until the election process concludes on April 30.

The notification states that, except for matters handled by the State Public Service Commission, no recruitment or appointment processes, including written exams, interviews, or selections within government departments, public enterprises, or corporations under the Aizawl municipality, should commence without prior approval from the SEC.

Additionally, transfers or appointments of officials within the municipality are not permitted during the MCC period. Any transfer orders issued before the election announcement but not yet implemented cannot be executed without special written permission from the SEC.
