
Mumbai, June 27: In a significant development, Ujjwal Nikam, a senior advocate and Rajya Sabha MP, has been appointed as the Special Public Prosecutor in the murder case that occurred at Lohagad Fort in Pune, Maharashtra. Nikam confirmed his appointment, stating that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis requested him to represent this high-profile case in court, a request he has accepted.
In an interview with a news agency, Nikam expressed that the incident is shocking not only for Maharashtra but for the entire nation. Chief Minister Fadnavis informed him about the case’s seriousness during a phone call. The CM mentioned that the victim’s family, the Agrawals, had approached him, seeking special attention to ensure justice in this matter. Following this, the Chief Minister asked Nikam to take on the role of Special Public Prosecutor, which he agreed to.
Nikam shared that he received the call from the Chief Minister while at his office. Fadnavis briefed him on the murder case in Pune, emphasizing that it poses a significant challenge for the state government. Nikam agreed to take on this responsibility, acknowledging the case’s complexity. He assured the Chief Minister that he would handle the case with utmost seriousness. However, he noted that the police investigation is ongoing, and he would be able to comment in detail only after the charge sheet is filed.
Additionally, Nikam responded to the resignations of Champat Rai, the General Secretary of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, and Trustee Anil Mishra. He described their resignations as a positive and commendable step to ensure the investigation’s impartiality.
Nikam stated that it is commendable that they have stepped down, as an investigation has already commenced. The trustees of the Ram Temple have set a good precedent by ensuring that there are no obstacles in the investigation. He believes this is a positive move that will allow the inquiry to proceed effectively.
