Guwahati, July 22: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reported on Wednesday that floods from April 29 to July 21 have impacted 727,506 individuals across 25 districts in the state. He assured that the state government is actively working on relief, rehabilitation, and restoring livelihoods for those affected.
The Chief Minister shared updates on the flood situation via the social media platform X, stating, “This is the real face of the widespread devastation caused by the Assam floods. I have assured affected families that they are not alone in this crisis. Our government stands with them at every step of relief, rehabilitation, and livelihood reconstruction.”
According to statistics released by the Chief Minister’s office, the flood has affected districts including Goalpara, Cachar, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Biswanath, Charaideo, Nalbari, Bajali, Chirang, Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon, Baksa, Sivasagar, Darrang, Sonitpur, Tinsukia, Udalguri, Golaghat, Nagaon, Karbi Anglong, Kamrup, Kamrup Metropolitan, and Hojai.
The data indicates that the floods have impacted 74 revenue circles and 1,700 villages. Currently, 95 relief camps are operational, housing 18,574 displaced individuals. Additionally, 469 relief distribution centers have been established to provide food, drinking water, and other essential supplies to affected families.
Government reports indicate that 31 lives have been lost due to flooding this year, with the highest number of fatalities—14—occurring in Sivasagar district. Other fatalities include six in Charaideo, five in Jorhat, two each in Dhemaji and Golaghat, and one each in Sonitpur and Karbi Anglong. A separate urban flooding incident on April 19 in Kamrup Metropolitan also resulted in one death.
The Chief Minister noted that three individuals are currently missing, one each from Dhemaji, Charaideo, and Karbi Anglong.
The floods have also caused significant property damage, with 401 homes completely destroyed and 1,848 partially damaged. Livestock has suffered as well, with 185 animals lost or dead, including 119 large animals, 31 small animals, and 35 poultry birds.
The Assam government is collaborating with district administrations and disaster management agencies to ensure the continuous distribution of relief, rehabilitation, and restoration of essential services in affected areas.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited a relief camp in Charaideo district to meet with flood-affected individuals. He stated, “I reviewed the arrangements at the relief camp and spoke with the affected people. Medical teams and all necessary facilities are available here. I have assured every family that the government will stand by them until relief, rehabilitation, and normalcy are restored.”
