Uganda Reports Three New Ebola Cases, Total Infections Rise to Five

Kampala, May 23: Uganda confirmed three new cases of Ebola on Saturday, bringing the total number of infections in the country to five.

The Ministry of Health reported that among the newly confirmed cases is a Ugandan driver who transported a previously confirmed patient. Additionally, a healthcare worker who came into contact with the virus while caring for the confirmed case has also tested positive. A woman from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), who arrived in Uganda with symptoms, is also among the new confirmed cases.

The ministry stated that the patients are currently receiving treatment. All individuals who came into contact with the confirmed cases have been identified, and response teams are closely monitoring them.

World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus praised the efforts of Uganda’s Ministry of Health on Saturday. These efforts include tracking, monitoring, and caring for suspected and confirmed Ebola cases.

Tedros emphasized the importance of taking precautions to prevent the virus from spreading during this challenging time. The WHO is collaborating with the Africa CDC and partners in DRC and Uganda to control the outbreak, assist affected individuals, and promote cooperative efforts.

The WHO stated on Friday that the risk to public health from the Ebola outbreak in Congo has significantly increased.

During a press conference, Tedros announced, “We are adjusting our risk assessment for Ebola to reflect a very high national risk, a high regional risk, and a low global risk.”

Meanwhile, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has called for increased solidarity to rapidly control the new Ebola outbreaks in DRC and Uganda.

Tom Fletcher, the UN Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights and Emergency Relief Coordinator, announced on Friday that the organization will allocate up to $60 million from the Central Emergency Response Fund to accelerate efforts to combat the Ebola outbreak in Congo and the surrounding region.
