Abu Dhabi, February 9: The presidents of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Egypt emphasized the urgent need to permanently end the ongoing conflict in Gaza, stating that the only path to lasting peace in the Middle East is through a “two-state solution.”
This meeting took place in Abu Dhabi amid rising tensions in the region, involving UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi. According to the UAE’s state news agency WAM, both leaders stressed the necessity of ensuring an immediate and lasting ceasefire and facilitating unhindered humanitarian aid to civilians in Gaza.
In a statement from the Egyptian presidential office, the leaders warned against any further military confrontations, noting that a broader conflict would have “serious implications for all.” They also highlighted that regional stability depends on the “unity and territorial integrity” of Middle Eastern countries.
Both leaders reiterated their commitment to resolving the multifaceted crises in the region through “peaceful means.”
In addition to the Gaza crisis, the meeting also addressed ways to strengthen economic cooperation between the UAE and Egypt. Sheikh Mohammed guided President Al-Sisi on a visit to the Mohammed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence, a key part of the UAE’s ambition to become a global technology hub.
The UAE has been a significant source of foreign investment for Egypt. In 2024, the UAE announced a historic deal worth $35 billion for the development of a large portion of Egypt’s Mediterranean coast. This project is expected to boost foreign currency flow into Egypt and stabilize the Egyptian pound.
Meanwhile, Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty called for the immediate deployment of an international stabilization force to monitor the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
According to the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, Abdelatty made this appeal during a phone conversation with his Greek counterpart, George Gerapetritis, where they discussed the escalating regional tensions.
He emphasized the need to advance the second phase of the peace plan proposed by the United States, which includes the deployment of an international stabilization force in Gaza. This plan received support from the United Nations Security Council last November.
Abdelatty also reaffirmed Egypt’s support for the recently formed Palestinian Technical National Committee, describing it as a crucial transitional body to meet daily administrative and humanitarian needs. This committee was established in mid-January to pave the way for the full return of the Palestinian Authority to the region.
The Egyptian Foreign Minister stressed the importance of ensuring a continuous supply of humanitarian aid to Gaza and laying the groundwork for early recovery and reconstruction.
It is noteworthy that the current ceasefire, effective since October 10, initially focused on prisoner exchanges and aid delivery. The proposed next phase envisions the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces, disarmament of Hamas, and the initiation of reconstruction processes under a transitional governance arrangement.
