U.S. Secretary Rubio to Discuss Oil Imports with Reliance in Mumbai

U.S. Secretary Marco Rubio plans talks in Mumbai on increasing Venezuelan oil imports and processing at Reliance Industries.

Mumbai, October 20 (Daily Kiran) : U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on Tuesday that he will engage in discussions with Reliance Industries Limited regarding increased imports of crude oil from Venezuela and its processing at the company’s refinery in Jamnagar, Mumbai.

This initiative has gained significance as the U.S. has taken control of Venezuelan oil fields, which produce a heavy crude oil that many refineries cannot process. Reliance’s facility, located on the coast of Gujarat, possesses the necessary technical capabilities to handle this type of crude.

Rubio’s visit marks the beginning of a three-day trip to India, where he first met with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at the Gateway of India. His discussions with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in Mumbai covered various topics, including trade negotiations, energy cooperation, technology partnerships, and policy issues related to the importation of critical minerals and crude oil from Russia and Venezuela.

There are expectations that the talks will enhance collaboration between India and the U.S. across sectors like trade, energy, investment, defense, and critical technologies. This is Rubio’s second visit to India in 2026, and he recently indicated that a comprehensive trade agreement between the two nations is nearly finalized, with the potential for signing during this trip.

Last week, President Donald Trump waived potential tariffs that were initially aimed at penalizing India for purchasing Russian crude oil. Through an executive order, he eliminated the 100 percent tariffs imposed on the five largest importers of Russian oil, which includes India, the second-largest buyer of Russian oil after China.

Rubio noted that the effort to finalize the trade agreement was partly influenced by the decision to waive these tariffs. He emphasized India’s role as a significant ally of the U.S., stating, “Countries like India have voluntarily diversified their energy sources, but they still purchase significant amounts of energy from Russia because it is challenging to change energy supply sources overnight.”

He reiterated India’s importance as a key partner for the United States.
