Hyderabad, August 19: Two tenth-grade students have been detained in Telangana’s Nalgonda district for the brutal murder of their school principal and director, 49-year-old Kallu Roopa Reddy. This shocking incident occurred over a week ago, and police have now made significant progress in the case.
Roopa Reddy was found dead at her home, suffering from 27 stab wounds. According to police reports, the students committed the murder for money, and one of them had a personal grievance against her.
Roopa Reddy lived with her husband, Rajendra Reddy, who was in Hyderabad for work at the time of the incident. She was discovered dead in her home on the morning of August 12.
The couple also owned a house in Hyderabad, where their son, Abhinav Reddy, is pursuing engineering studies. Roopa Reddy had recently traveled to Hyderabad with her husband for a three-day break. While Rajendra remained in Hyderabad for work, Roopa returned alone to Konda Mallepally on August 10. She worked at the school during the day and stayed until around 6:30 PM.
The following day, she did not show up at school, raising concerns for Rajendra, who was unable to reach her by phone. He contacted a police officer living nearby and requested a welfare check. Upon arrival, the officer, along with neighbors, discovered Roopa Reddy’s lifeless body.
The murder sent shockwaves through the community. Police interrogated over 50 individuals, including her husband, but initially found no leads. However, a detailed review of nearby CCTV footage revealed a clue: a teenager was seen loitering around her home.
Based on this lead, police apprehended the suspect, who confessed to the crime, stating it was committed for financial gain. On the night of August 11, two masked students arrived at Roopa Reddy’s house. One entered and threatened her for money. When she resisted, the assailant’s mask slipped, revealing his identity as a fellow student. In a panic, he attacked her with a knife multiple times, resulting in her death.
The assailants stole ₹2.20 lakh in cash from the house, with one student giving ₹40,000 to the other waiting outside. Police investigations revealed that the students had spent part of the stolen money at various locations. Authorities recovered ₹1.60 lakh in cash from one of the students, with blood stains found on some of the notes.
It was reported that one student had a personal vendetta against Roopa Reddy, as she had issued him a transfer certificate, leading to his expulsion from the school.
