Kolkata, August 28: The Kolkata High Court has established a deadline for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to complete its new investigation into the rape and murder of a female junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital by August 2024.
A bench comprising Justice Shampa Sarkar and Justice Tirthankar Ghosh announced the timeline after the CBI submitted a progress report during a closed-door hearing.
Sources familiar with the proceedings indicated that the bench directed the CBI to conclude the new investigation process within three weeks after reviewing the progress report.
It has come to light that the victim’s family had previously filed a petition to investigate 54 aspects of the case. The CBI’s lawyer informed the court that 16 of these aspects had been examined.
According to sources, the CBI provided information about the aspects investigated in this new phase. Notably, on the night of August 8, 2024, a delivery boy brought dinner for the victim and the doctors working in the emergency department of RG Kar.
The CBI informed the court that investigators had questioned the delivery boy. Additionally, the agency revealed that four doctors who dined with the victim that night were also interrogated.
Following this, the CBI’s lawyer requested four weeks to complete the new investigation process, but the court granted only three weeks. The next hearing in the case is scheduled for September 24.
Initially, the Kolkata Police conducted the investigation before the case was handed over to the CBI following a court intervention. Sanjay Roy, a former civic volunteer associated with the Kolkata Police, was the sole accused and is currently serving a life sentence.
However, the victim’s family accused the Kolkata Police of negligence in their initial investigation. Subsequently, the Kolkata High Court ordered the CBI to initiate a fresh investigation with a new team. In accordance with this order, a new CBI team has commenced the investigation.
