Shillong, September 1: A Meghalaya court has sentenced a man to 30 years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually abusing his minor stepdaughter. The case was registered in 2020 in the East Khasi Hills district.
The Special POCSO Court in Shillong, presided over by Special Judge (POCSO) M.K. Lingdoh, found Teren Mallih guilty in a case filed at the Mongaep police station on August 28.
According to East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syem, the case was registered on December 7, 2020, accusing Mallih of sexual exploitation of his minor stepdaughter.
The police filed the case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. During the investigation, Mallih was arrested, and the police submitted a charge sheet to the court on February 5, 2021. The court convicted Mallih under sections 4, 6, 8, and 10 of the POCSO Act, imposing separate sentences for each offense.
Under section 4, he received a 20-year prison term and a fine of ₹30,000. If he fails to pay the fine, he will face an additional three months of simple imprisonment.
For the offense under section 6, the court imposed a 30-year rigorous imprisonment and a fine of ₹40,000, with an additional four months of jail time for non-payment.
The court also sentenced him to five years and a fine of ₹10,000 under section 8, with one month of additional simple imprisonment for non-payment.
Under section 10, Mallih received a seven-year prison term and a fine of ₹20,000, along with one month of extra simple imprisonment for failing to pay the fine.
While determining the remaining sentence, the court considered the time Mallih had already spent in custody. He had been in detention for three years, 11 months, and 28 days. According to the police, Mallih will now serve an additional 26 years in prison.
The investigation was conducted by Women Police Sub-Inspector L. Kharjana, currently stationed at the East Khasi Hills Women Police Station.
