Lexington, August 16: Two shootings occurred in the United States within a span of 24 hours. The first incident took place at Virginia State University, followed by an attack in a park in Kentucky. The shooting in Kentucky resulted in one fatality and left four others injured.
The shooting in Virginia happened early Saturday morning, while the Kentucky incident occurred Saturday evening. According to Lexington Police Chief Lawrence Weathers, the attack took place at Charles Young Park, where five individuals were shot.
Among the injured are a 4-year-old child, a 14-year-old teenager, and two adults. All victims were hospitalized for treatment.
According to Xinhua News Agency, a significant police presence was noted downtown Lexington on Saturday night, with several nearby streets closed as authorities continued their investigation.
No information regarding suspects or the deceased has been released, and no arrests have been made.
In a separate incident on the same day, five people were injured in a shooting at Virginia State University, prompting a temporary lockdown of the campus. The university reported on social media that “multiple suspects” were involved, leading to a complete lockdown of the campus.
When police arrived at the university’s residence hall around 1:30 AM local time, they found five individuals with gunshot wounds. The victims were transported to a nearby hospital, where one was reported in critical condition while the others were stable.
The university later announced that the lockdown had been lifted, and both county and campus police are investigating the shooting.
It remains unclear if any suspects have been arrested. Virginia State University is located in Chesterfield, Virginia. CBS News affiliate WTVR reported that the new academic session was set to begin on Monday.
Meanwhile, in a shooting at a high school in Houston County, Georgia, two students were injured on Wednesday, and a suspect has been taken into custody.
