Kathmandu, September 8 (Daily Kiran) : A series of earthquakes shook northeastern India and neighboring Nepal on the night of September 8. The National Center for Seismology (NCS) reported the seismic activity through its official social media account.
According to the NCS, a magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck Nepal at 9:38 PM Indian Standard Time. The epicenter was located at latitude 29.022 and longitude 83.978, with a depth of 143 kilometers. This quake was recorded 196 kilometers northwest of Kathmandu.
Due to its depth, the earthquake’s effects were likely felt over a wide area. Fortunately, the greater depth typically reduces the risk of surface damage. As of now, there have been no reports of casualties or property damage in Nepal, which is known to be highly susceptible to seismic activity.
Earlier in the evening, a smaller quake was also reported in Assam. The NCS noted that a magnitude 2.3 earthquake occurred at 8:29 PM Indian Standard Time. This quake was centered at latitude 26.373 and longitude 90.159, at a shallow depth of 8 kilometers, near Kokrajhar, which lies 95 kilometers north of Tura in Meghalaya.
The tremor in Assam was mild, typically considered a minor earthquake on the Richter scale, and often passes without causing damage.
In recent days, there has been an uptick in seismic activity across the northeastern region of India and Nepal, attributed to the ongoing collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates in the Himalayan region.
