Two Postal Workers Sentenced in Lucknow Bribery Case

Lucknow, October 13 (Daily Kiran) : A Lucknow CBI court has convicted two postal employees in a bribery case, delivering its verdict on Monday. Suraj Prasad Mishra, a postal assistant stationed at the Kunda sub-post office in Pratapgarh, received a three-year prison sentence along with a fine of ₹15,000. His colleague, Santosh Kumar Saroj, the sub-postmaster, was sentenced to six months in jail and fined ₹5,000.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) registered the case on November 30, 2019. The charges stated that Saroj and Mishra conspired to solicit illegal bribes from a commission agent. They demanded a fixed bribe of ₹100 for every ₹20,000 deposited into recurring deposit accounts, referring to it as a “convenience fee.” The duo also threatened the agent, warning that failure to pay would result in work disruptions and obstacles.

On the same day the case was registered, CBI officials apprehended Suraj Prasad Mishra while he was accepting a bribe of ₹1,000 to process a deposit of ₹200,040.

Following the investigation, the CBI filed a charge sheet against both Saroj and Mishra on December 31, 2019. After a trial, the court found both men guilty and imposed the sentences.

In a related case, a special CBI court in Lucknow previously sentenced four individuals in a significant ₹6.37 crore scam involving LIC. This ruling was announced on September 30 and included a government employee, Pankaj Saxena, who was serving as a higher-grade assistant at LIC’s Transgomati branch in Jankipuram, Lucknow, along with three others: Prem Shankar Upadhyay, Rekha Upadhyay, and Manish Saxena.
