
Beijing, February 13: United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres announced that the UN General Assembly has appointed 40 members to the newly formed Independent International Scientific Panel on Artificial Intelligence. Their term will last for three years.
Song Haithao, president of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Research Institute, along with Wang Qian, a scholar from the Chinese Academy of Engineering and an expert in cloud computing technology, have been selected as the Chinese representatives.
The statement revealed that the panel members were chosen from over 2,600 candidates worldwide. Their selection underwent an independent review by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the UN Office for Digital and Emerging Technologies, and UNESCO. The panel boasts a multidisciplinary background, emphasizing geographical diversity and gender balance.
Guterres stated, “We now have a multidisciplinary, globally leading team of AI experts that is geographically diverse and gender-balanced. They will provide an independent and impartial assessment of the opportunities, risks, and impacts of AI, supporting a new global dialogue on AI governance.”
