Kolkata, February 17: Kolkata police have arrested two individuals for allegedly holding two Bangladeshi nationals hostage under the pretense of securing visas and extorting money from them.

Authorities from the Technocity police station conducted a raid at a hotel on Monday, successfully rescuing the two Bangladeshis.

The police apprehended both the suspects and the victims during the operation. Interrogations of the arrested individuals have begun.

According to police sources, the two Bangladeshi citizens, Rajiv Laskar and Junaid Miyan, had recently arrived in India with valid visas. They intended to travel from India to Turkey. In their quest to obtain visas, Rajiv and Junaid contacted a broker named Achintya Kumar Pal.

Investigators claim that a Bangladeshi national named Humayun Kabir introduced Rajiv and Junaid to Achintya Kumar Pal. Following this introduction, the two Bangladeshis were lured under the guise of obtaining visas, only to be held captive. The suspects demanded a ransom of three lakh rupees, which was reportedly transferred from a bank in Bangladesh to the kidnappers’ account. However, further demands for money were made afterward.

Meanwhile, police officials received confidential information about the incident.

The Technocity police station officers raided the hotel and rescued the two Bangladeshi nationals. They arrested Humayun Kabir and Achintya Pal on charges of illegal detention and extortion. Reports indicate that the arrested suspects were presented in Barasat court in North 24 Parganas on Tuesday.

A senior officer from the Bidhannagar police commissioner’s office stated, “The police will keep them in custody for further investigation. Efforts are ongoing to identify any other individuals involved in this case and to determine if they have committed similar offenses in the past.”
