Washington, January 4 – US President Donald Trump has announced that following the arrest of Nicolas Maduro, the United States will temporarily govern Venezuela. He emphasized that Washington must oversee the transition to prevent instability and rebuild the country’s oil infrastructure.
When asked who would govern Venezuela, Trump stated, “We will run it with a group, and American officials have already been selected for this purpose.”
Speaking at a news conference at Mar-a-Lago, the President said the US will remain in control of Venezuela until a safe, proper, and sensible transition occurs. Leaving prematurely could risk repeating past failures, he warned.
Trump highlighted Venezuela’s vast oil reserves, calling the region central to both recovery and stability. He noted that Venezuela’s oil business has come to a halt and that major US oil companies will invest billions of dollars to restore the oil trade infrastructure.
“We will rebuild the oil infrastructure, and the oil companies will directly fund it,” he added.
Trump also said the US will maintain its presence in Venezuela’s oil sector, with revenues benefiting the Venezuelan people and repaid to America.
Regarding the deployment of US troops, Trump responded, “We are not afraid of having soldiers on the ground. Americans were already involved during the operation.”
He assured that US governance will not allow individuals linked to Maduro’s government to remain in power. “We know who they are and are keeping a close watch on them,” Trump said.
On working with Venezuela’s current vice president, Trump mentioned that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has spoken to him, and he is willing to cooperate as needed.
Trump described the move on Venezuela as aligned with his ‘America First’ policy, emphasizing the desire for good neighbours. He stressed that Venezuela’s energy resources are crucial for global stability.
The President confirmed that the US is engaged in the oil business and will sell large quantities internationally.
Addressing concerns about a prolonged US administration in Venezuela, Trump dismissed fears of harm to American taxpayers, citing oil revenue as a source of income.
The US has imposed long-standing sanctions on Venezuela’s oil sector and accused Maduro’s leadership of corruption and mismanagement, which weakened the economy and led to mass emigration.
