Understanding Swelling During Pregnancy: Causes and Home Remedies

New Delhi, April 8: During pregnancy, women experience numerous changes in their bodies, one of which is swelling in the hands, feet, or face, known as edema. This condition is commonly observed in the second and third trimesters. At this stage, the body produces approximately 50% more blood and bodily fluids to meet the needs of the growing baby. This excess blood and fluid can lead to swelling.

To reduce and manage swelling, several simple measures can be taken. First, it is essential to regularly monitor blood pressure. This helps in identifying any potential rise in high blood pressure. Additionally, it is crucial to reduce salt intake, as salt can cause the body to retain water, exacerbating swelling. Meals should be light and balanced, avoiding spicy or sour foods.

Engaging in light exercise can also aid in reducing swelling. Taking short walks or doing stretches daily helps promote proper fluid circulation in the body. Elevating the legs slightly while sleeping can also alleviate swelling. Placing a small pillow or cushion under the legs can facilitate better blood flow. Prolonged standing or sitting can increase swelling, so it is important to move around periodically.

Moreover, some Ayurvedic and home remedies can be beneficial, such as taking 5 grams of gokhru powder with water twice a day or 500 milligrams of punarnava mandur twice daily for 15 days to help reduce swelling. However, it is advisable to consult a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner before starting any new treatment.

Typically, this swelling is mild and not a cause for concern. However, if it becomes excessive or is accompanied by high blood pressure, it is crucial to contact a doctor immediately. If swelling occurs alongside blood pressure readings over 140/90 or symptoms like dysuria, it may indicate a more serious condition. In such cases, a doctor can provide appropriate evaluation and treatment.
