Washington, March 17: President Donald Trump has expressed frustration over the reluctance of countries dependent on energy supplies through the Hormuz Strait to support the United States. He emphasized that these nations should not only be grateful to America but also offer assistance in return.
Trump pointed out that several major countries heavily rely on this strategic maritime route for their energy needs. He specifically mentioned China, Japan, and South Korea as examples. According to him, Japan meets nearly 95% of its energy requirements, while China and South Korea depend significantly on oil and energy supplies from the Hormuz Strait.
He noted that it has become easier to unite countries now compared to two weeks ago, suggesting that some nations were more willing to step forward after the U.S. took decisive military action. However, he expressed disappointment in the attitudes of certain countries, although he acknowledged that one or two nations had provided excellent cooperation, which he would reveal later.
Trump particularly highlighted his discussions with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, during which he requested naval support. He stated that if Britain could send some warships and minesweeping vessels, it would be very helpful. He described the British response as hesitant, with Starmer indicating he needed to consult his team. Trump asserted that as Prime Minister, the decision should rest with him.
He remarked that by the time support was offered, it was too late. “Now I don’t need them. After winning, I don’t need them; I needed them before starting the work,” he stated.
Additionally, Trump reiterated his longstanding concerns about NATO, stating that while the U.S. always stands by its allies, many countries retreat when America needs support. “I’ve always said, you know, the problem with NATO is that we are always there for them, but they are never there for us,” he noted.
Nevertheless, he acknowledged that some countries were fully prepared to support the U.S. and wanted to play an active role. Trump also raised concerns about the security of ships in the region, mentioning that it remains unconfirmed whether mines have been laid in the sea, but the mere suspicion causes shipping companies, which operate billions of dollars’ worth of vessels, to be apprehensive.
