Agartala, May 18: Tripura police have arrested a security guard and a health department employee while questioning over 15 others. This action follows the emergence of a viral video showcasing a large sum of cash at a woman’s home in the state’s Dhalai district.
A senior police officer reported that Ajit Debbarma (48), a resident of Abhaynagar on the outskirts of Agartala, and his wife Menka Debbarma (45) were taken into custody. Ajit is a rifleman with the Tripura State Rifles, while Menka works in the health department.
The officer added that five individuals have been detained, and approximately ten others are being questioned to gather information related to the viral video. Intensive search operations and investigations are ongoing in various parts of Dhalai and West Tripura districts.
Chief Minister Manik Saha stated that he directed relevant authorities to take appropriate action against the accused after viewing the viral video on social media. “We do not hide or protect anyone accused of a crime. The law will take its course,” he affirmed.
Last week, the state was shaken by a viral video showing bundles of cash amounting to crores of rupees in a house located in the Bhathakhori area under the Salema police station in Dhalai district.
However, police have yet to recover any cash from the house of the woman, who is the wife of a police constable.
Police Chief Anurag reportedly expressed strong displeasure over the incident and instructed senior officials to promptly visit the scene and take strict action against all involved.
Following these directives, Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Manchak Ipper, Deputy Inspector General (Northern Range) Rati Ranjan Debnath, Superintendent of Police Rishikesh Jaisingh Desai, and several other senior officials initiated a thorough investigation.
Police officials noted that by late Sunday night, around 15 individuals had been detained or questioned regarding the case. Among those in custody are several women, police personnel, Tripura State Rifles members, and a health department employee.
A police officer mentioned that all are currently being interrogated at the Ambassa and Agartala police stations. After the questioning is completed, police will decide on formal arrests.
Authorities suspect that an interstate gang may be involved, linked to illegal financial transactions and drug trafficking.
High-level sources indicated that approximately 5 crore rupees in cash have been recovered during the investigation.
